A smile makeover is a procedure that enhances the appearance of the smile with the help of a combination of various dental procedures. It includes enhancement of lips, the colour of teeth, size of teeth, lip position, etc.

Teeth colour is improved with the help of veneers or by bleaching the teeth. Abnormally shaped teeth are also fixed with the help of veneers and crowns. Crooked and crowded teeth are corrected with the help of procedures like braces, crowns, etc.

The procedures involved in a smile makeover are described below.

Veneers and crowns

Veneers are tooth-coloured shells that are fixed on the surface of teeth and are used to fix their colour, shape, and position. These are applied for enhancing the appearance of front teeth. Veneers are primarily used for cosmetic purposes like fixing a chilled or crooked, realigning the teeth, etc. Porcelain or resin veneers are some of the most common veneers used. Veneers are applied over the surface of teeth with the help of dental cement.

Crowns are used for the same purpose, the only difference being that crowns cover the whole surface of the teeth and not just the front teeth surface like veneers. They also provide great support to teeth and are used for improving various tooth conditions like tooth decay and other conditions. The crown placement procedure includes an X-Ray of teeth and the creation of an impression or mould which helps to create a permanent crown to place on the teeth. Until a permanent crown is prepared, the patient is provided with a temporary one.

Teeth whitening

It is the removal of stains with the help of stain removal techniques like laser, whitening is a very common procedure and is performed within one visit. Teeth staining happens due to the consumption of wine, beer, coffee, tobacco, etc. Consuming all these things leads to unpleasant and tinted teeth which in turn affect the smile.

The teeth whitening procedures include the application of tooth whitening gels that contain hydrogen peroxide and the teeth are observed under a specialized heating lamp or laser. There are 20-minute intervals in between this procedure which involves the application of tooth whitening gel over the teeth. And of course, a protective separation barrier is used to cover the gums, inner cheeks, tongue, and other parts of the mouth that could easily be damaged.

After the procedure is completed, the patients are usually provided with at-home whitening solutions and teeth whitening trays so they can maintain the result of the procedure.

Orthodontic treatments

Orthodontic treatments are used to straighten crooked, misaligned teeth that are positioned inside the mouth at a weird angle. Along with correcting the structure, they also improve the appearance of the teeth.

The procedure involves either placement of braces or Invisalign over the teeth. Braces are applied with caution by a dental professional. The placement starts with the insertion of equipment that keeps the mouth dry and protects the other parts of the teeth. Next, the braces are applied over the surface of the teeth with the help of a special adhesive. A curing light is shown over the adhesive to strengthen it and finally, lighting bands are applied to hold the braces in place.

Invisalign application includes an examination of teeth and preparation of a mould accordingly for the preparation of Invisalign. When the aligners are prepared, the dentist will fix small attachments to maintain a good grip of the aligners over the teeth. After that, the patient can regularly change the aligners and can visit the dentist for check-ups.

Dental implants

Missing teeth can largely impact the smile as well as the facial structure. Dental implants help in filling the vacant space of the teeth.

The procedure of dental implant includes cutting the gum to expose the jaw underneath. Holes are drilled deep into the jaw bone where the implants post will be inserted. After the jaw strengthens a little bit over time. An abutment is also added to the implant so that it can connect the replacement tooth to the bone. After the tooth is completely healed, a replacement tooth is placed over the implant.

Composite bonding

It is a procedure that is used to cover chipped, cracked teeth that give the smile an unpleasant appearance. It includes the application of tooth-coloured resin over teeth. Firstly, the surface of the tooth is mad enough and then a liquid is applied on the surface to strengthen the bonding of resin to the teeth. Then, the composite resin is applied over the h. The surface of the resin is hardened and strengthened with the help of ultraviolet light. After completion of the procedure, patients are advised not to consume hard foods to avoid damaging the resin until it completely solidifies.

Why do you need a smile makeover?

Many patients who have crooked, chipped, or tinted teeth often feel under confident about themselves. A smile makeover can improve the appearance as well as restore the confidence of the patient and will help them feel good about themselves.

Smile makeovers also ensure good oral health as they typically include cleaning and sometimes extraction of rotten teeth which automatically ensures good oral hygiene and good health. Also, the realignment of teeth ensures the proper functioning of the teeth as well. The patient will observe improved biting function, improved structure, etc.

Do you need to take any precautions?

Patients are advised to take proper care of their teeth following a smile makeover procedure and are advised to follow the following precautions:

Avoiding hard foods

Hard food items can slow down the healing process and can damage the teeth.

Avoid cold or hot foods

Food items that are either too hot or too cold are supposed to be avoided as the teeth are particularly sensitive to temperature and sensations after a smile makeover procedure.

Avoid cigarettes and tobacco

Smoking and tobacco consumption can range the sensitive gums severely and can also stain the newly treated teeth to a great extent.
